Welcome to SHREWS Ltd.

SHREWS Ltd is a project development company which identifies the opportunities in a problem and develops businesses based on these, working worldwide but primarily in Scotland, the Baltic States and West Africa.

Our team has a strong environmental and business background and focuses on being a solution driven company in renewable energy, covering Energy from Waste (EfW) and biomass to energy projects.

SHREWS Ltd. works through the project cycle from:

  • inception of the idea
  • definition of the project
  • technology solution
  • preparation of the business plan
  • planning and permitting
  • application for funding
  • project implementation
  • delivering the project

Opportunities arise everywhere so the company has also been involved in technology companies, business parks, forest industries investments, automated car parking ….  amongst other things.

SHREWS Ltd acts as project developers on their own behalf and work for others, either as direct advisors for an agreed fee or sometimes on a carried interest basis.

If you have a waste stream or a biomass source and want to expand your business into renewable energy, or have a site suitable for an EfW of biomass project, we would like to hear from you.

Equally if you have a solution or a technology that could be an opportunity in markets you are not familiar with, mainly the Baltic States and West Africa, we would like to hear from you.

SHREWS Reduces Energy Consumption at Brick Works.

John Birchmore was recently involved in a project to look at reducing energy costs at a major brick works. Significant costs savings were achieved by changing the fuel but further investigations are in hand to use waste as the source of fuel for curing bricks and tiles as well as making the works a net exporter of electricity, making the fuel needed a source of revenue.

Innovative Renewable Energy Ltd.

Company formed to identify suitable sites for energy from waste projects, and then secure planning consent and build out the projects.

For more information please contact John Birchmore

SHREWS Ltd launches new EIS company.

With recent changes in legislation, changes the tax regime and technical advances there are opportunities to develop very profitable small scale energy from waste (EfW) plants based on advanced thermal treatment technologies. These opportunities are being constrained by the lack of sites available to developers which have planning consent. To overcome this problem SHREWS Ltd, which has a proven track record in securing planning consents for small scale EfW plants, is launching a new company, Innovative Renewable Energy Ltd (IRE) under EIS regime to identify suitable sites, secure options over these sites and then secure planning consent. Once planning has been secure the site can be developed out. For more information please contact john.birchmore@shrews.co.uk

Enterprise & Lifelong Learning
On 10th January John Birchmore and Jamie Carruthers met with Allan Wilson MSP, Deputy minister for Enterprise and Lifelong Learning  to discuss the role for waste in contributing towards the goals for renewable energy in Scotland and also the need to co-ordinate the policies on waste management, development of SME’s and renewable energy.

The briefing note can be read by clicking here

National Waste Strategy for Scotland
The National Waste Strategy for Scotland was debated in the Scottish Parliament on 17 November 2005 The specific extract of the afternoon’s proceedings can also be accessed by clicking here. The benefits of Advanced Thermal Treatment were extolled by several speakers.

The company also notes the opening remarks made by Mr Ross Finnie and believes that the strategy being outlined by Mr Finnie is flawed. The particular paragraphs are highlighted in yellow. We will be writing to Mr Finnie on these matters and the letter will be posted here. We regret that no MSP saw fit to challenge Mr Finnie on his strategy which we believe is counter to encouraging local solutions and will preclude the involvement of SME’s. We also challenge the presumption in favour of compost as the preferred route for green waste.
